Of the Flesh, The Art of Andrew Krasnow
1. Dec - 17. Jan 09 / ends in 10 days GV ArtMonday to Saturday 11am - 7pm
Flag from Flagpoll, 1990 and Shitkickers, 2005
Now open to the public for the first time.
Andrew Krasnow is an acclaimed conceptual artist whose works have been described as both ‘powerful’ and ‘thought-provoking.’
Since 1988, Krasnow has frequently incorporated legally-sourced human tissue into his mixed-media installations. While such works have frequently been the subject of controversy, it has never been the artist’s intention to scandalise or sensationalise. Instead Krasnow has used the power of his medium to draw attention to what he considers important social and political issues: the dangers of extreme nationalism, the horrors of war and man’s continued inhumanity towards man.
Krasnow believes that it is only through his use of human tissue that he can convey that this sense of suffering, pain and loss is universal. Drawing on the tragedy of his own life and that of the world around him, Krasnow illustrates both the fragility and dignity of all human life. Though often overlooked, this is the strong spiritual message that underscores all of Krasnow’s works; one that is not confined to any single belief system. It is a message that speaks to the humanity in all of us.
GV Art is proud to present the European debut of Andrew Krasnow’s Of the Flesh.

Excellent

I was deeply touched by this exhibition in a way that I was not expecting. A gentle, visceral, spiritual experience. Courageous and sensitive.
Entering behind the misted glass of the gallery frontage to step into a processional installation, leading me into a provocatively thought provoking dialogue on many levels from political to existential. My senses and my feelings led me into a state of profound respect for the vulnerability and the endurance of the human condition.

Whatever expectations I had of Krasnow's work were shattered by this unsettling, confronting yet intensely beautiful installation. This is art that resonates long after you have witnessed this unique form of artistic expession.
These works ask you to consider not only the fregility of existence and the universality of suffering but also what lurks beneath the surface of America's skin ego. In this era of Obama-euphoria I was confronted by the deep-seated prejudices that have forged a nation and the divide that separates idealism and political expediency. And what of the many ethical issues this exhibition raises, the body as a commodity etc...I am still trying to work this out.
Krasnow's works in skin are a pleasant change from the superficial three-ring circus that is Body Worlds..a must-see!

A privilege

I cannot better the two previous comments, but am grateful for having had the privilege to experience this body of work whilst it is still together.
Walking in to face the human skin is an experience which stays with you, but go prepared to take on board alot more.

Wow - absolutely mind blowing

This is an exhintion I was not not expecting, in fact i'm not sure what I was expecting as the title conjours up images which are totally different from what was on display.
The power and the emotion of the artist pour through his work and retell the suffereing that he has undergone. The nature of 'freedom of speech', and the censorship of ideas, values and morals are all explored.
I went home and and still think about these works even after seeing the exhibition a few days ago. I can assure you that this does not happen very often.

What about those boots?

If the show is as good as the comments reflect, why is the photo of the boots and the flag so insouciant? I am left wondering about this work.

A truly thought provoking exhibition

This exhibition has left me awe struck and speechless. I totally agree with the comments above (except for number 5!). Photos don't do the work justice - I strongly recommend a viewing. It's like nothing I have seen before or since.
